Your filter should be backwashed when the pressure gauge is approximately 50 kPa above the baseline pressure reading or if it is in the ‘red zone’ on the pressure gauge. Do not get in the habit of backwashing at a set interval regardless of whether the filter needs it or not. The debris in the filter actually aids the filtration process and should only be backwashed as needed.
We have created a step by step guide on How To Backwash Your Sand or Glass Filter. A common mistake is not rinsing the filter after backwashing the filter. The rinse cycle helps settle the sand back down and prevents sand from ‘blowing back’ into the pool when you resume normal filtration. follow our guide to backwash properly.
